Why install solar panels in Luxembourg in 2026?

Luxembourg receives an average of 1,000 to 1,100 useful hours of sunshine per year — enough for a well-oriented photovoltaic installation to produce most of your household electricity consumption. Three factors make 2026 particularly favourable:

The 2026 Klimabonus grants for solar power

Since 4 January 2026, the State grant favours self-consumption. Two schemes exist side by side:

Self-consumption scheme (the most advantageous)

The grant covers up to 50% of the cost of the installation, capped at €1,250 per kWp, up to a total of €10,000. In return, you give up the guaranteed feed-in tariff: the electricity you produce is used in your own home first.

Feed-in scheme

The grant is 20% of the cost, capped at €500 per kWp. In exchange, you benefit from a guaranteed feed-in tariff for 15 years, set at €0.1374/kWh in 2026. This scheme cannot be combined with the self-consumption scheme of the new Klimabonus.

Storage battery

An additional grant of up to €2,250 is available for installing a battery coupled to your photovoltaic system.

Good to know: the grant is pre-financed. Since 2026, the approved installer deducts the grant amount directly from your invoice — you no longer have to front the cash while waiting for the State to pay out.

Worked example: a 5 kWp self-consumption installation

Take a family installing 5 kWp in Mersch for a cost of €11,000 including VAT:

  • Cost of the installation: €11,000
  • Klimabonus grant (50%, capped at €1,250/kWp, i.e. €6,250): €5,500
  • Net cost to you: €5,500

Conditions and steps to follow

To qualify for the photovoltaic Klimabonus, a few key rules apply:

  • Approved installer: the installation must be carried out by a qualified company registered in Luxembourg.
  • Approval in principle: in most cases, a prior application is required before work begins.
  • Grid connection: your grid operator (Creos or the local provider) validates the connection and the bidirectional meter.
  • Eligible invoice: keep all paid invoices; the payment request is made via MyGuichet.lu.

Some municipalities also grant a municipal subsidy that can be combined with the Klimabonus — check with your local council.
